Visiting Services - Visiting is an important function of our support group and is done both pre-operatively and post-operatively, but only with the approval of the attending physician. Visitors are ostomates themselves and are carefully screened, trained and monitored by health professionals. They are not qualified to give medical advice. Talking with a person who has had an ostomy surgery and who demonstrates an ability to live a normal active life, frequently helps the patient to accept the surgery, and is very important in the rehabilitation process. The ostomy visitor, who is well adjusted and emotionally stable, offers visual evidence and reassurance that life with an ostomy is not a handicap. This program is co-sponsored with the American Cancer Society, Greater Houston Unit. To arrange for a certified ostomy visitor or for more information call American Cancer Society in Houston at 713-266-2877 or use our feedback form to request a visitor. Doctors and ET Nurses please note: Upon request from a doctor or nurse, a specially trained visitor will be sent to visit an ostomy patient before and/or after surgery. The visitor will be matched according to sex, age, and type of ostomy, in so far as possible. There is no charge for this service. The visitor does not give medical advice.
